As a place-based program that works closely with communities, NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries has an important responsibility and opportunity to work with Indigenous communities to better understand and recognize their rights, responsibilities, knowledge, values, and other connections to places and resources. These connections to place are central to the identities and cultures of Indigenous Peoples. NOAA is committed to upholding its trust responsibilities to federally recognized Tribal Nations, and to working equitably with all Indigenous Governments and communities. Building equitable partnerships with Indigenous communities is essential to fulfill NOAA’s mission to protect national marine sanctuaries as nationally significant places for current and future generations.

The Office of National Marine Sanctuaries developed a road map to improve engagement and collaboration with Indigenous communities and support Indigenous-led conservation and restoration priorities related to the National Marine Sanctuary System.
